Logical fallacies

Arguments based on authority, popularity, tradition, ignorance, emotion and/or circular reasoning are all fallacious bullshit by definition.

Some examples:

  • "The War in Iraq was a good idea because the President said so, and he IS (well, WAS) the President, after all!" or "Circumcision is a good idea for male babies! After all, my doctor recommended it, and he IS a doctor!"
  • "Well, everyone here thinks gay marriage should be illegal. Let the people decide!" or even "Johnny is right because we all like him best so we said so!"
  • "I don't care if you want high school football players to wear padding and helmets like fucking pansies; they never used to, and if it was good enough for my grandpappy, it's good enough for me, doggonit!"
  • "Uh, EVILution can't be true! It doesn't even make any sense, like, I don't get it!"
  • "We need internet filtering to prevent kiddie porn and bans on 'violent' video games! After all, what about the children!? Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children!?" and its variation of "If we don't pass the PATRIOT Act, the Terrorists™ will have won!"
  • "The Bible is true and infallible because the Bible, which is true and infallible, says so!" and its variation of "God exists because the Bible says so, and the Bible says God wrote it, so God must exist and the Bible must be true!"

There are many many more examples, which all of us should strive to remember, understand, and recognize. Critical thinking is the best talent humans have, and it's sad to look around and see exactly how bad at it we still are oftentimes.
